The iPhone 18 Pro Has a Variable Aperture Camera. Now That Actually Interests Me.


Every year, Apple tells us the new iPhone camera is better than the one before it. More detail, better low-light performance, smarter processing, improved video and usually some new computational photography trick happening quietly in the background.

All useful improvements. But after watching smartphone cameras evolve for this long, it takes something a little different to get my attention.

The iPhone 18 Pro has done that with a variable aperture.

Apple's new 48MP Fusion Main camera can physically change its aperture between ƒ/1.48, ƒ/1.8, ƒ/2.8 and ƒ/4.0. Inside the camera is a six-blade aperture mechanism that actually changes the opening through which light reaches the sensor. (Apple)

That sounds like something I'd normally be writing about on a dedicated camera, not an iPhone.

And that's why I'm interested.

Most smartphone photography has increasingly been about software compensating for the limitations of tiny camera hardware. Take the picture and let computational photography decide what it should look like. HDR, noise reduction, portrait blur, sharpening and exposure adjustments happen so quickly that we barely think about them anymore.

Variable aperture puts another piece of physical photography back into that process.

At ƒ/1.48, the iPhone can open the aperture wider to collect more light, which is useful when shooting indoors or at night. Apple claims around 50 percent better low-light performance in this mode. At ƒ/4, the aperture becomes much smaller, increasing depth of field so that more of the scene can remain in focus. (Apple)

Think about taking a group photo. A very wide aperture might look great when photographing one person because you want separation between the subject and background. Put several people at different distances from the camera, however, and suddenly you might prefer more depth of field.

The phone can adjust this automatically, but Apple is also allowing users to manually select the aperture through its new Pro controls. Those controls extend beyond aperture to things like shutter speed and white balance, with a histogram available for checking exposure. (Apple)

Now we're getting into proper camera-geek territory.

Of course, Apple didn't invent variable-aperture smartphone cameras. We've seen manufacturers experiment with the idea before. Samsung famously used a dual-aperture system years ago, and Huawei has offered variable aperture on some of its flagship camera phones.

But Apple's implementation interests me because of where smartphone cameras are heading.

The iPhone 18 Pro now has three 48MP rear cameras covering Main, Ultra Wide and Telephoto duties, with up to 8x optical-quality zoom. Apple is increasingly treating the Pro models less like phones that happen to have excellent cameras and more like compact imaging systems that happen to make phone calls. (Apple)

Will variable aperture suddenly make an iPhone replace a mirrorless camera?

No.

A larger sensor, proper lens and physical controls still give a dedicated camera advantages that clever phone engineering can't magically erase.

But that's almost beside the point.

What interests me is seeing smartphone manufacturers experiment with physical camera engineering again, rather than relying entirely on another layer of computational photography and AI.

I want to see what ƒ/1.48 actually looks like at night. I want to compare ƒ/1.48 and ƒ/4 on the same subject. I want to know whether changing aperture genuinely changes the character of the photograph or whether Apple's computational processing eventually makes everything look suspiciously similar anyway.

Those are questions that make me want to pick up the phone and experiment with it.

And for a new iPhone camera, that's probably the best compliment I can give it.
